“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be.” Matthew 6:21So many times people forget that it’s not just material things that we can’t take with us. There are some emotional things we can’t take with us too. As we prepare ourselves on earth for our journey home with the Lord, here are some things that we should be trying to get rid of.
One of the biggest things that we can’t take with us to heaven is grudges. There is absolutely no room for unforgiveness in heaven. Why would you even want to drag this garbage around on earth anyway? Forgiveness isn’t for the person who hurt you, it’s for you. The longer you hold on to hurt and anger towards someone, the longer they have control over you. Forgive and take back control. “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6: 14
Another thing you can’t take with you is pride. No one gets to heaven by good deeds alone, they get there by the grace of God. It’s because Jesus Christ died for us that we have access to this grace. “If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.” 2 Corinthians 11:30.
No one should look down on anyone else. No one here on earth is perfect. We should all be striving to be like Jesus, who is perfection. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18.
Hatred is another thing you can’t take with you. How can you possibly expect to take hate to a place of pure love? Our Father in heaven is love; therefore we have to love each other as well. The Lord says, “Love your neighbors as yourself.” Matthew 22:39. This goes for everyone. There is no room for hate towards anyone, no matter what color, religion, gender or political belief. We even have to love our enemies. “But I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:44.
Now, here is the good news. We can take joy, peace, love, comfort and security with us. Wouldn’t you much rather take these things with you anyway?
